8 Tips for Your Graphic Design Portfolio

Image
When applying for graphic design jobs, your portfolio is everything. Most employers skim the e-mail and cover letter, skip the CV and go straight for the goods—your portfolio. You only get one first impression, so make it a good one. I’ve taught at Shillington for 4+ years, and one of the highlights of the course is watching our students pull together their best work into a polished portfolio. It can be a testing, and at times, overwhelming task. Ultimately the pride and sense of achievement the students feel at the end is worth all the sweat and tears. Most designers will tell you that a portfolio is never perfect nor finished, but here are some tips to help you on the right track. 1. Show more than just “beautiful” design Showcase the design process and explain how you got from initial idea to solution. A good portfolio should explain or demonstrate how you problem solve. Probably the top piece of feedback we hear from employers is that they want designers who can think wel

The 9 Best Neighborhoods to Stay in Rome

Image
Posted: 9/30/2019 | September 30th, 2019 Rome is a city that sparks a thousand mental images. From ancient structures like the Colosseum or the Pantheon, to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, to the Vatican — not to mention tons of pasta and other delicious food — it has it all. But planning a trip to Rome can sometimes be a pain. Where should you stay? What are the best neighborhoods? Rome is huge. It has 15 municipi (administrative areas), with the city center municipio alone divided into 22 smaller districts. Whether you’re after a more historical area or something more local-feeling, or whether you are keen to experience great Italian food or Roman nightlife, there is a neighborhood in this amazing city to suit you. To help you figure that out, here are some of my extensive thoughts on the best places to stay during your time in Rome based on my years of experience visiting there: 1. Trastevere Trastevere is filled with narrow, cobblestone alleyways that run past bu

Linked: Brand New Appreciation

Image
Tre Lyerly writes about encountering Brand New as a 12-year-old kid and I have all the feels (which is not a sentence I write frequently, if at all). I am not posting this as a self-pat on the back nor am I fishing for compliments but it's rewarding (and kind of freaky) to see the extent in which some dude (me) writing about logos at 5:00 am every day -- along with the collective opinions in the comments (the good, the bad, and the ugly) -- can have a positive impact on the least expected people (and by that I mean, I am never writing with a 12-year-old in mind as the audience). Free sustainable packaging design tool launched

Image
The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has launched a free-to-use online tool to help product designers work more sustainably with plastic. PackScore asks users a set of questions relating to their prospective packaging designs and gives a rating from A to F. This rating is then coupled with information on more effective usage of resources, such as lightweight designs and use of already recycled materials. The platform has been created to help product designers and manufacturers in the early stages of the design process. Stephen Hunt, membership services director at the BPF, says it’s there to help “facilitate conversations” about sustainable packaging. “[PackScore is designed] to help designers, retailers and brands understand how simple design choices can help them create packaging that’s easy to recycle,” he says. In this way, designers can scrap plans in their initial stages if they don’t meet recyclability criteria, thereby saving money and resources. Consumer attitudes toward

Remembering Glenn Tutssel: “I am in the business of the big idea beautifully crafted”

Image
Glenn Tutssel, image courtesy of Leon Tutssel “Glenn’s standards were higher than you could imagine — it was the best thing about him,” Garrick Hamm says of Glenn Tutssel. Tutsell — the designer acclaimed for his ‘drugs and drinks’ packaging — was known for being a “taskmaster” but it was that persistence, combined with a singularity of vision, that led him to become such an influence in the industry. “I can’t think of anyone else who touched so many designers, and helped them succeed,” Hamm, his frequent colleague, adds. Tutssel, designer, husband and father died this week, aged 68 following a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and his two children, Leon and Lauren. Over his 50-year career, he worked with a wide variety of brands, from BP to Boots. Tutssel’s particular interest though, was drinks; he helped create identities for Bacardi, Guinness and Peroni. Hailing from Glamorgan in south Wales, Tutssel was inspired by design at a young age by his school art

Reviewed: New Logo and Identity for Skyscanner by Koto

Image
“I See Sun-tanning People” Established in 2003, Skyscanner is an online travel platform that started as a flight search engine only and has grown into a full travel booking service for flights, hotels, and car rentals. Owned by Chinese company, Ctrip, the largest online travel agency, Skyscanner has been growing steadily with their website available in over 30 languages and with offices in the UK, Singapore, Spain, China, United States, Hungary, and Bulgaria. Last week, Skyscanner introduced a new identity designed by Koto . Travel brands have got lost. Wacky advertising, same-same destination photos, product experiences that are hard to differentiate. As one of the originals, Skyscanner prided itself on product excellence, but was lagging on emotional resonance. We worked with them to build a brand leading the global transformation to modern and sustainable travel. Koto project page Logo. The new symbol is a key step in Skyscanner's brand evolution.
