2 Years Since Shillington Sydney: Natasha Michels—Designer at Nine Publishing and Creative Director at Sweaty City magazine

Image
When #ShilloSYD grad Natasha Michels sat in the break room at her retail job, she never expected the Shillington ad in a copy of Frankie magazine she had casually picked up would offer the perfect and unexpected answer to the gnawing thought: “How do I get out of here?” With no desire to go back to uni and feeling ready for a change, she committed to the siren call of a career in design and leapt into the part-time course at Shillington—whilst still working full-time. Only two years after graduating, Natasha now works as a Graphic Designer at Nine Publishing , alongside her role as Creative Director of the brand new Sydney-based independent magazine Sweaty City —which she co-founded with friends. We caught up with Natasha to talk about where her career has taken her since graduating from Shillington, what goes into crowdfunding and launching an independent publication and why DIY projects with your mates are a must for keeping the creative juices flowing. How did you learn about Sh

The 13 Best Things to See and Do in Taipei

Image
Posted : 5/30/2020 | May 30th, 2020 Taipei, the capital of Taiwan and its most populous city, is the epicenter of tourism for the country (though most people just come for a short layover as it’s a major air hub for Asia). And while there is plenty to do elsewhere in Taiwan , even if you don’t leave Taipei, you can still find lots of things to see and do in the area to fill close to a week! I love Taipei. I lived here in 2010 while I taught English and built this website. It was a wonderful experience that helped me grow as a person. A decade later, I finally made it back to the city I loved so much and it was remarkable to see that so much of what I loved was still there: the endless gigantic food markets serving some of the best food in the world, a wild nightlife, spacious parks, interesting and quirky museums, and nearby mountains that call to you with easy and accessible hikes. Taipei (like Taiwan as a whole) is a hugely underrated destination and I can’t urge you enough to v

What Should You Include On Your Hand Sanitizer Labels?

The global COVID-19 pandemic has made the direct link between cleanliness and health clearer than ever before. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration notes that while washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is the standard for removing germs from the skin, people can use alcohol-based hand sanitizers in the absence of running water. The new emphasis on hand sanitizer products has led to high levels of demand and shortages among businesses and individuals alike, and more companies are stepping up to produce bottles of sanitizer. The FDA has acknowledged that many of the organizations just getting into this type of manufacturing have not previously been approved as drug manufacturers, and has responded by creating a temporary hand sanitizer labeling guidance document  for use during the public health emergency. If your company is one of the firms shifting to alcohol-based hand sanitizer creations, you should quickly learn the requirements for bottle labels . A clearly

An environmental cleaning brand that avoids a “generic” eco tone

Image
London-based studio SomeOne has created the new visual identity for Ocean Saver, including packaging design, brand strategy and tone of voice. Ocean Saver is a range of plant-based cleaning solutions, which takes the form of cleaning pods. These pods can be dissolved in water and kept in a reusable and recyclable spray bottle, in an attempt to cut down on plastic waste. It also seeks to create a more environmentally-friendly production cycle, by reducing transportation of water which means fewer vehicles on the road. The brand uses recyclable and biodegradable materials for their products. “Humorous activist” The branding plays on the product’s more unusual positioning. Tone of voice was particularly important in setting Ocean Saver apart from its competitors – taking on the voice of a “humorous activist”. SomeOne’s founder David Law says that the tone of voice is “designed to be positively provocative”. He says it speaks to “all of us that know that the cleaners we use are ma

In May, Helsinki hosted a virtual gig by creating a digital twin of itself. Finland’s capital was accessed by over 700,000 people (12% of the country’s population) through the immersive simulation. While attendance was no doubted boosted by lockdown boredom, the project has been in development for over two years. The most streamed band in Finland, JVG, performed to a virtual audience. The gig was a tie-in with the city’s status as Capital of Smart Tourism, and showed how the country is innovating at a time of crisis – this time through technology design (created by Finnish VR studio Zoan). https://s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/centaur-wp/designweek/prod/content/uploads/2020/05/29141540/JVG-20-SEC-CONCERT-3.mp4 It should not come as much of a surprise.
