Pride 2020: the role of design in the LGBTQ community

Image
“When it comes to design and the queer community, there’s not a world in which I would ever want one to exist without the other,” so says graphic designer Rebecca Brooker. Brooker is the co-founder of Queer Design Club, an online community for LGBTQ designers. Its mission, she says, is to provide queer creators with a space to share work and build relationships with each other. Design Week speaks to Brooker as the month of Pride, celebrated each year in June, is drawing to a close. With the coronavirus pandemic prompting worldwide lockdowns and Black Lives Matter protests erupting across the globe, it has been a very different Pride month in 2020 to what many have grown used to. Throughout it all, she says, design has proved to be an important tool for both disseminating information and unifying a dispersed community. Pantone unveils app to colour match with “real life”

Image
Colour company Pantone has revealed a digital platform and matching product for designers which aim to streamline the colour decision-making process. Pantone Connect rolls out across mobile, web and the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of applications. The mobile app provides access to the complete range of Pantone’s colour spectrum. “Capture colour from real life” https://s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/centaur-wp/designweek/prod/content/uploads/2020/06/30152643/Instragram-Final-Output-V3.mp4 As part of the announcement, Pantone has also launched a product. Colour Match Card is a credit card-sized target that can be calibrated with a phone’s camera to “capture colour from real life”. The card has a hole in its centre, and users centre it on an object whose colour they want to use. It is then as simple as taking a photo. By uploading it to the mobile app, Pantone can then match it to the nearest tone. The app then saves the colours into the designer’s palette. Pantone Digital Solutions

Remembering Milton Glaser: “You can’t be good at everything”

Image
Milton Glaser, the American graphic designer behind one of the most well-known logos in the world, has died on his 91st birthday following a stroke. He will be best remembered for his I ♥ NY logo, though his work spans hundreds of visual identities and poster designs. He spoke to Design Week in 2018, on the publication of a book featuring over 400 of his designs, and talked candidly of his life’s work, both good and bad. “I didn’t want to only show work that represented the best of what I did,” he said. “It’s more appropriate to also show the crummy things and the clinkers. You can’t be good at everything.” “Remarkable self-confidence” Glaser was born in 1929 in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. Raised by Jewish Hungarian immigrants, he studied at arts college The Cooper Union in the city’s East Village. It was here that he met fellow designers Seymour Chwast and Edward Sorel. After college, he studied in Bologna, Italy as a Fulbright scholar. On his return to America, he jo

Rachel Hess adopts an experimental approach for her designs

Image
Around nine years ago Ohio-born creative Rachel Hess was studying fine arts at the University of Cincinnati. While she enjoyed playing with mixed media and creating things from scratch, she soon became interested in learning more about typography and working within the digital space. “So I shifted into graphic communication design the following year, taking drawing, screenprinting, ceramics and painting alongside my design courses throughout,” explains Hess.  By alternating her studies with internships it led to a long and fruitful period of creative exploration. “I had the space to figure out what I liked and didn’t,” she says. “It wasn’t until after I graduated and was offered a part-illustration and part-design gig that I saw being both an illustrator and designer as a viable option.”  Misc items Now based in Brooklyn, New York, Hess is working at an ad agency, art directing and illustrating primarily for online food services Seamless and Grubhub, though she still makes time to
