The Next “R” in the Sustainable Triad: Reuse

Image
A few months ago, we introduced the concept of material reduction in the development of sustainable packaging and labeling ( Material Reduction ).  It is the first element of the “Reduce – Reuse – Recycle” fundamentals we are all aware of. This month we talk about ‘reuse’ of packaging and packaging elements as a strategy to achieve a sustainable program.  Nearly every consumer goods package produced today is a ‘single-use’ package.  It will hold a product a consumer will purchase at retail, and then be discarded when the packaging is emptied. In a best-case scenario, all or some of the package components will be recycled. But what if instead of being discarded, with no guarantee that it will not end up in a landfill, or worse, one of the world’s oceans, it provided additional function to the consumer?  That is the main subject of an article published in 2019 by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation – Reuse: Rethinking Packaging 1 .  There are four reuse models examin...

Linked: Home is where the Lowe's is

Image
Visit Link Very clever and charming bit of animation from Lowe's as its logo shifts through different house shapes before settling on the corporate version. A nice end to a spot that successfully alludes to the current situation without any of the clichés . Opinion Other than the odd counterspace of the “B”, I liked the old logo and it was a good update of the original logo that maintained its equity. The new logo takes the two “D”s out of their container box, which I think was the most recognizable aspect of this logo: that brief tension created inside the rectangle with the two “D”s facing each oth...

Reviewed: Friday Likes 330: From Javas Lehn Studio, Essen International and Carl Nas Associates, and After

Image
“From Javas Lehn Studio, Essen International and Carl Nas Associates, and After” A bevy of nice bottles and their accompanying designs this week, with work from New York, Stockholm, and Lima. Solento by Javas Lehn Studio Solento is a small-batch brand of tequila founded in Encinitas, CA, by legendary surf filmmaker Taylor Steele in collaboration with a distillery in Mexico. The name is a contraction of the Spanish words sol (sun) and lento (slow) and the design, by New York, NY-based Javas Lehn Studio , is as chill as a slow-setting sun. With such a textural and unique bottle, the design elements are pared back to the bare minimum but they still pack a punch with the bold color contrast of the labels across the three different tequila styles. A monospace font is probably not what one thinks of when thinking about tequila but when you have three words with the same amount of letters, it's almost a crime to NOT use a monospace font but, beyond that, it simply looks quite nice...

UsTwo creates a climbing-themed adventure for Facebook Gaming

Image
It’s six years since digital design studio UsTwo created Monument Valley: an MC Escher-inspired puzzle game that racked up millions of downloads, and set a new bar for mobile gaming in the process. The project’s success prompted UsTwo to create a dedicated games division, which has spent the past few years crafting some impressive follow ups – from Monument Valley II to the charming Assemble With Care . This week, UsTwo’s New York office released a new title created exclusively for Facebook’s gaming platform. Set in a glitchy, cyberpunk universe, Go Go Bots is a fast-paced game that allows players to test their logic by completing a series of climbing challenges. Players can choose from one of five robot characters and play in solo or multiplayer mode, competing against others to complete climbing routes in the fastest time possible. https://s3-eu-central-1.amazonaws.com/centaur-wp/creativereview/prod/content/uploads/2020/05/Square-1.mp4 As Chris Marotta, design lead at UsTwo New ...

Lose yourself in Martin Parr and Toiletpaper’s weird and wonderful new book

Image
What do you get if you cross Martin Parr’s ironic and colourful documentary photography with the witty tableaux of biannual art magazine Toiletpaper? A visual feast, of course, which comes in the form of the aptly named new photobook, ToiletMartin PaperParr. Since 2010, the creatives behind Toiletpaper, Maurizio Catellan and Pierpaolo Ferrari , have carved out a niche for themselves crafting images that fuse the vernacular of commercial imagemaking with surrealism. The duo have worked with Parr on a number of occasions, but first teamed up with him in 2018 on a special edition of the magazine, which saw some of Parr’s classic photographs paired and juxtaposed with their own images. The same approach has been taken with ToiletMartin PaperParr, a new 200-page tome, where images from the artists appear alongside each other in its pages. Speaking to Magnum Photos about the new book and their working relationship with Parr, Cattelan describes him as a “brother that sometimes you ad...
