Oscar the Grouch swaps Sesame Street for Squarespace

Oscar is the latest in a string of celebrity spokespeople for the brand, which has been endorsed by everyone from Idris Elba to Keanu Reeves. In the ad, the unsuspecting muppet is ‘discovered’ by a passer-by, keen to share his trash sculptures with the world. Once he’s got his own Squarespace site set up, fame is quick to follow – much to the disgust of Oscar, who just wants to be left alone to his garbage and his trash can.

Highlights of the ad include an effusive gallery owner, begging Oscar to fill his white cube gallery with rubbish; the moment the dejected muppet is forced to take a taxi; and the grand opening of Oscar’s very own Contemporary Trash Museum.

While Squarespace’s previous ads have been similarly playful, there’s something particularly enjoyable about this one – thanks to Oscar’s presence, as well as its clever parody of the art world.

The ad comes with an extra element too, to celebrate Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary. Real-life garbage sculptor Justin Gignac has designed a series of trash cubes for sale, filled with objects ‘found’ on Sesame Street – think giant paperclips, cookies and yellow feathers.

Money raised from these – which at the time of writing were all sold out – will be donated to nonprofit organisation Sesame Workshop.

Practical Action rebrands to show “how small actions can change the big picture”

NB Studio has created a new identity for Practical Action, a UK development organisation. Practical Action was established in 1966 with the aim of creating appropriate technologies for developing regions of the world. It works primarily in Eastern and Southern Africa, South Asia and Latin America. It was founded by economist and philosopher Fritz Schumacher whose book, Small is Beautiful, champions the concept that small changes can empower people more than big ones. Practical Action’s aim is to provide sustainable technologies – systems that countries can accommodate with their existing resources – instead of providing large-scale aid that cannot be easily sustained. When Life magazine was re-launched by magazine magnate Henry Luce in 1936, the idea was to put photojournalism at the forefront and publish only photography-led stories. Readers soon became accustomed to seeing images from around the world that gave them the kind of first-hand insight they’d never previously had.
