Picks of the month: the best design events to catch in March

Image
Event: Ladies, Wine & Design Scotland Ladies, Wine & Design was set up by New York-based designer Jessica Walsh ( who last year split from Sagmeister & Walsh to start her own studio, &Walsh ). The global non-profit (it’s present in over 200 across the world) aims to help female and non-binary designers internally through a series of talks and meetings; currently it’s estimated that only 12-16% of creative directors are female. These events — set across Edinburgh and Glasgow — will bring a Scottish edge to proceedings, and a speaking line-up that includes Briana Pegado (Creative Edinburgh), Alex Durusel-Baker (Creative Mornings), Kat Loudon (Design by Zag) and Nat Maher (Pollitt & Partners and Kerning the Gap). Workshops include calligraphy classes, embellishment and bookbinding. A note on the name: Wine is welcome, but not a necessity. When: 28 March. For more information, including locations and ticket prices, please check the website. Book: Virgin by Design

Exhibition: The Swedish Design Museum To Go, by Visit Sweden According to Visit Sweden – the country’s official travel and tourism website – blending in with locals is one of the most rewarding experiences for seasoned travellers. To help facilitate this further, the organisation has launched the Swedish Design Museum To Go, an exhibition that encourages you to get hands on with some of its most well-designed exports as a way of exploring the country. Housed inside a designer backpack from Swedish brand Sandqvist, visitors can have four different experiences depending on where they are in the country. In the east, for example, local curators have filled the backpack to reflect the culture of Stockholm, with tech, textiles and cosmetics. In the west, visitors are given the necessary means to enjoy the Swedish countryside, with a board game, pens and different fashion. Noted: New Logo and Packaging for Denver Distillery by O Street

Image
“A Tear Drop in the Bucket” (Est. 2018) "In the historic Baker neighborhood, Denver Distillery is the city's first distillery-pub in town. Denver Distillery's spirits evoke a feeling of historic Denver, the 'Queen City of the Plains'. Our hand-built stills and old world techniques pull out the unique subtleties from the finest regionally sourced, non-GMO ingredients giving our spirits flavors that haven't been experienced since the 1800s." Design by O Street Related links O Street project page Relevant quote The first task was to reflect the value of handcrafting in their brand. O Street redrew their logo, drawing on the sculpted iron version that appears over the doorway to the distillery. Working with the distillery’s historic working-class neighborhood, O Street then specified typography and designed a suite of logo lockups with an appropriate feel. Denver Distillery’s charismatic owner Ron Tarver and his wider team, are deeply interested in

O Street celebrates “spirit of lore and legend” in Denver Distillery rebrand

Glasgow-based design studio O Street has rebranded Denver Distillery, a distillery-pub located in Colorado, US. The new identity, which includes a redrawn logo, new bottle labelling and new typography, aims to strengthen the Denver Distillery brand across its range of spirits, physical premises and communications. Designing “magic” into the brand Having previously conducted business in small quantities, O Street design Tessa Simpson says the distillery was in need of a brand that better reflected its “quality, craft and unique provenance” as it shifted into broader distribution channels. “They were jumping into a much bigger pond and they required a look that made people stop and take notice of them,” she says. With this in mind, the team chose to focus the branding around the distillery’s “charismatic owner”, Ron Tarver. Labelling Tarver a “true character”, Simpson recalls O Street’s first meeting with him: “He was quoting the Old Testament and grilling us on Scottish folklore.”
