Introducing the Brand New Podcast: The Follow-up!

After the amazing and (amazingly) supportive response we received from many on you on the state of UnderConsideration last month, we were encouraged, inspired, and motivated to finally take the plunge and start a podcast!

The Follow-up is a weekly podcast that goes in depth into projects recently reviewed on Brand New, featuring conversations with the designers -- and sometimes their clients -- uncovering the context, background, and design decisions behind the work. Episodes will range from 30 to 45 minutes.

It is a subscription-based podcast -- $5 a month or $50 a year -- which will allow us to keep the blog free and open while providing the podcast as a "premium" add-on that will build on the content you already enjoy.

Our model is directly influenced and inspired by the Dithering podcast by Ben Thompson and John Gruber, which was mentioned by Brand New reader, Evan, in the comments. Their model and set-up instantly caught our attention and for the past 20 days we have focused on bringing our own podcast to life.

The first official episode will be released next Tuesday, June 23, but you can now subscribe and listen to a quick introduction from me and Bryony. Even if you don't subscribe yet, you can listen to it and perhaps our intro/outro music will convince you : )

We recorded the first episode last week and the content is seriously good and I don't mean that in a sales-y way... I think it really opens up the understanding on how these projects get done and gives us all a peek into their context.

We have some FAQs on the site about how/where to listen as well as some other matters. We are completely new at this podcasting thing so any and all feedback is and will be welcome so that we can improve with each week.

Practical Action rebrands to show “how small actions can change the big picture”

NB Studio has created a new identity for Practical Action, a UK development organisation. Practical Action was established in 1966 with the aim of creating appropriate technologies for developing regions of the world. It works primarily in Eastern and Southern Africa, South Asia and Latin America. It was founded by economist and philosopher Fritz Schumacher whose book, Small is Beautiful, champions the concept that small changes can empower people more than big ones. Practical Action’s aim is to provide sustainable technologies – systems that countries can accommodate with their existing resources – instead of providing large-scale aid that cannot be easily sustained. The legacy of Life magazine’s images celebrated in new show

When Life magazine was re-launched by magazine magnate Henry Luce in 1936, the idea was to put photojournalism at the forefront and publish only photography-led stories. Readers soon became accustomed to seeing images from around the world that gave them the kind of first-hand insight they’d never previously had. At one point it was selling 13.8 million copies a week, and in its lifetime the magazine commissioned more than 120,000 stories and 10 million photographs.
