(Est. 1953) "The Indianapolis Colts are an American football team based in Indianapolis. The Colts compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Since the 2008 season, the Colts have played their games in Lucas Oil Stadium. Previously, the team had played for over two decades (1984-2007) at the RCA Dome. Since 1987, the Colts have been the host team for the NFL Scouting Combine. The Colts have been a member club of the NFL since their founding in Baltimore in 1953. They were one of three NFL teams to join those of the American Football League (AFL) to form the AFC following the 1970 merger. While in Baltimore, the team advanced to the playoffs 10 times and won three NFL Championship games in 1958, 1959, and 1968. The Colts played in two Super Bowl games while they were based in Baltimore, losing to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V. The Colts relocated to Indianapolis in 1984 and have since appeared in the playoffs 16 times, won two conference championships, and won one Super Bowl, in which they defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI." We're introducing an evolved design for our wordmark. The new wordmark incorporates some modern elements while embracing some of the design features from our traditional mark. With this new design, our traditional wordmark becomes a classic mark and will be used primarily for historical or throwback campaigns and gear.

The old wordmark was charming but its Old West aesthetic was probably wearing thin and at least I would associate it more with a Texas-based team. The new wordmark has a more industrial feel, which doesn’t seem quite the perfect fit for Indiana either but, being a Midwest city, it’s not out of place either. The execution is quite nice, with big thick slabs and barely-there notches — a nice respite from the spiky sports cliché. The new secondary mark has the right intentions but the shape of the state in the counter space is very awkward, looking like the letter chipped a tooth. To its credit, the state shape is easily recognizable and will play well to the audience. The grommets are a nice touch as a way to tie it back to the primary horseshoe logo, which would have probably been good enough before inserting the state’s shape in there. Uniform updates are solid, mostly because of the new slab numerals, which — at least from the “2” and ”3” shown — look promising. Overall, the logos have their quirks, but along with the Rams and Chargers recently, it adds some more engaging design personality to the team and the league.
